The SAIL improvement board

A local governing body within Reach South Academy Trust consists of the following:

  • 4 Trust appointed members
  • 2 Elected parent members
  • 2 Elected staff members
  • Headteacher

Additionally, there can be up to 3 Co-opted members.

SAIL Governance Arrangements 2024

Currently, there is an Improvement Board in place which consists of Trust Appointed Governors and / or those appointed by the GB / Improvement Board and which will be supported by Reach South Academy Trust Representatives. The Improvement Board will meet regularly to provide challenge and support to the school and work directly with the Trust Board.

Penny Marland - Chair and Trust Appointed Governor

Penny Marland was a Probation Officer for 20 years, retiring from the NPS in February 2022. She is a Trustee of The Amber Foundation and the Chalke Valley History Trust.

She is President of South West Mencap. Previously, she was a governor of three schools between 1997 and 2016.

 

Caroline Marking - Trust Appointed Governor

Caroline has an MA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Trinity College, Oxford. She worked in Finance and Executive Recruitment in London and Paris before moving to Wiltshire in 2000. She was a Governor and Chair of the Education Committee at Leaden Hall School (a private Prep School for girls) in Salisbury for a number of years. Caroline joined the board of Chilmark and Fonthill Bishop School 6 years ago which was a double RI school but after a comprehensive school improvement plan and a restructuring of the curriculum was judged to be Good by OFSTED in September 2023. Chilmark is small rural church primary with mixed aged classed.  It is a small FGB, and Caroline is the Chair with responsibility for Safeguarding, SEND and link Governor for Humanities and Staff Wellbeing.

Caroline is a Trustee at Wilton Riding for the Disabled which is a large RDA centre offering therapeutic riding and equine therapy to over 90 clients per week. The clients are children and adults with additional needs who come to Wilton Riding for the Disaabled as individuals or as part of school groups. Caroline is responsible for Safeguarding, Employment, and Insurance on the RDA board. She is also the Volunteer coordinator for Saturday riding when they have Duke of Edinburgh placements for under eighteens and some volunteering opportunities for young people with additional needs who build confidence and self-esteem during their time with them. SAIL is in contact regarding riding as alternative provision for some of their young people. 

Caroline was also involved with the Chalke Valley History Festival where she ran the volunteers for this weeklong festival for 7 years. This involved recruiting and managing up to 170 people from 16 years upwards. Additionally, Caroline is a member of her local Parish Council and a Salisbury Hospice Fundraising committee.

 

Carina Sawyer - Trust Appointed Governor

Carina is currently Head of Governance at Magna Learning Partnership, a role she has held for 5 years.  Prior to this she worked in educational governance for 10 years.  She was awarded the NGA’s Outstanding Governance Professional award in 2021.  Her early career, following a degree in Electronic Engineering, was in the tech sector.

Carina and her husband live in Salisbury and have three children
